Intersections on dangerous list By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RURAL intersections in Selwyn are rated the second most dangerous in New Zealand. Data shows as of May this year, three fatal or serious crashes were recorded at rural intersections within the district. Selwyn ranks below Hamilton, which also had three fatal or serious crashes recorded at its rural intersections. The information was released by the New Zealand Transport Agency, using data from its crash analysis system.

It was discussed at the district council’s road safety subcommittee meeting last week as part of a report from committee chairwoman and district councillor Nicole Reid. Inspector Peter Cooper said the statistics were not a surprise. He believed Selwyn had more stop signs at rural intersections than any other area in the country, he said. “When you drive around in Selwyn you come to so many double intersections with stop signs each way and they are all high speed, 80 to 100km/ph.

That is what heightens the risk,” he said. Mrs Reid said the district’s landscape was another reason. “Our roads go for quite some distance so if you are distracted there is the potential to miss the intersection coming up,” she said. Other factors included a boom in population and increase in traffic numbers, and the mix of local, commuter and city traffic. A trial of solar-powered flashing LED signs, which have been in place at some of the district’s most dangerous intersections for

the past 18 months, is set to be evaluated next month. The idea was first put forward by Sergeant Dan Harker. He and his pregnant wife were nearly killed after they were hit by another car while driving through an intersection in the district about 20 years ago. Sergeant Harker said the trial had produced positive results. “It is working, that is the main thing...there haven’t been any crashes at any of the sites, when there normally would have been up to 11. They work,” he said. Mrs Reid said the committee

needed to review the effectiveness of its road safety activities and its road visibility. The committee resolved to hear from various agencies involved including police and NZ Trucking Association, about what programmes were in place to reduce risk. A GREAT effort on Saturday by the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust which planted 1000 trees and shrubs on Ken and Denise McKenzie’s property which was devastated by the Port Hills fires (see page 7). The house was saved but the vegetation was destroyed by the huge blaze which raged through the area. Trusts like the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust have a very important role in society, but the key to their hard work is the people – so well done. Lincoln High beards: School sets out facial hair rules By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LINCOLN HIGH School has set the ground rules for its new trial allowing students to grow facial hair. It is dropping its clean-shaven only rule after its students won a year-long campaign for facial hair. A board of trustees meeting was held last week to finalise the rules and the length of the Kathy Paterson trial period. The new rules require facial hair to be tidy and no longer than 3cm. Facial hair must be groomed and not extend on to the neck. Longer beards may be allowed for medical or cultural reasons. Board of trustees chairman Adrian Paterson said he does not think the length of the beards will be an issue. “I don’t think anyone will be running around with a ruler to see if it is 3cm or not. It can grow longer than a stubble but we are not looking for full-on

An earlier survey of staff, students and parents at the school found many supported allowing facial hair. But Mrs Paterson said she did not see the need to release the survey.

“We have used the student voice, we co-constructed the outcome with the students. There is no need at all. News One third of the journey over for By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A THIRD of the $195 million Southern Motorway upgrade has been finished. The Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 is on target to be ready by early 2020, which will see a section of Main South Rd widened to four lanes and

the project linked up to the Halswell Junction Rd end of the motorway. Work on the major project has been under way since November and is set to ramp up as summer approaches. The motorway aims to halve the travel time between Rolleston and Christchurch from 30 to

about 15min. Over winter, more than 300,000 cu m of earth was moved, two new roads built and the first of eight bridges has almost been completed. New roads Tiptree Lane and Manion Rd are open, along with construction at Justine Drive having just begun.

motorway New Zealand Transport Agency principal project manager Geoff Griffiths said the new roads give access to homes and businesses. He said Manion Rd allows the CSM2 team to carry on with work on the four-lane motorway from Weedons Rd to Curraghs Rd. The Main South Bridge, north of Rolleston, is 80 per cent complete and is planned to take traffic up and over the motorway. Work on the Weedons interchange and Main South Rd is also progressing. Motorists are able to travel up to 110km/h on some of the country’s expressways, including Tauranga’s eastern link. The southern section of the Christchurch motorway would be considered for this in the future. Mr Griffiths said the 110km/h limit can only be applied to roads that have been built to a standard where an increase in the speed limit is both safe and appropriate. A number of factors need

Volunteers replant after fire damage MORE THAN 60 people pitched in on Saturday to help a couple whose property was devastated in the Port Hills fires. They volunteered their time to plant about 1000 native seedlings on Ken and Denise McKenzie’s Early Valley Rd farm. The house was saved during the fires by helicopters dousing it with monsoon buckets, but the land was left badly damaged. The couple’s plantings of native trees, some which were 25 years old, were burnt in the fires. Mr McKenzie said he was left touched by the work volunteers had put in. He and his wife never would have achieved what the

volunteers did in a morning, he said. “It was amazing,” he said. The event was organised by Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust coordinator Elizabeth Guthrey. About 40 volunteers were registered with the trust while another 20 associated with the farm helped on the day. Mr McKenzie described it as a wave of planting that moved across the hill. The couple had planned to divide their farm before the fires, with two thirds for grazing and one third native habitat. When Mrs McKenzie’s first

plantings matured enough to produce seed, she had collected and potted the seed to plant in other parts of their farm. Many of the plants she had sprouted herself burned to the ground. The trust has now written a restoration plan for the McKenzie’s property and plans to continue helping them by contributing more volunteers and funds in the future. News Mud race finally gets green light WILD WEATHER almost caused the district’s muddiest event of the year to be postponed for a third time. After having to delay the Sheffield Mud Plug twice, organisers were concerned the event was going to have to be cancelled for good. But with a lot of persuasion from landowner Derek Bull, who held the event on his farm, the organisers decided to attempt to run the event. Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade chief officer Neville Croy, who helped organise the event, said it was a great decision and they could not have got a better day. He thanked everyone who made this event successful, enjoyable and safe. The fun day required fourwheel drivers to race through 12 muddy obstacle courses. All proceeds went to the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade and Malvern Order of St John. The amount raised from the day is still being counted. About 2000 people came through the gate to take part in the 4x4 event. Mr Croy said some entrants took the sport seriously with one competitor investing $130,000 in his buggy.

their TJ Jeep Wrangler, while Nathan Hammond won the buggy class. It is the fourth year in a row Mr Satherley has won the event. Competitors travelled from as far as Nelson and Dunedin to take part. But the day would not have been complete without a couple of vehicles tipping over. One driver tipped twice in the morning and once in the afternoon. Mr Croy said the marshals did an amazing job keeping people safe and ensuring the event ran smoothly. The event was also supported by the Springfield Volunteer Fire Brigade and the community. Mr Croy said the food sites also had a good time with Mr Whippy and the coffee man kept busy all day.

CultureFest celebrates diversity Military course

ABOUT 3000 people turned out last weekend to celebrate Selwyn’s growing diversity in the district. CultureFest 2017 featured 23 performances from 20 different ethnic and cultural backgrounds along with 15 food vendors representing a different country. The event was held on Sunday at the Lincoln Event Centre and Lincoln Domain. The district council’s senior events and recreation adviser Dave Tippett said the festival was an outstanding success. There were plenty of craft, games and activities including Iranian hand crafts, Mah Jong, Henna Tattoos, face painting, balloon art, highland games, Japanese traditional games and of course Te Taumutu kiwiana products and craft. Multiple agencies also displayed information and support services for residents and newcomers and migrants like the

OVER THE last six weeks I have had the privilege of being the patron of the S e lw y n Limited Service Volunteers Course S01/18 at Burnham Military Camp. The course brings 100 1725 year-olds together from across the country to develop leadership, self confidence, and work readiness skills. The course is run with Ministry of Social Development support and in conjunction with NZ Police. Officer Commanding Grant Boore and his staff work with each young person to challenge old habits while building self esteem. The transformation in the young people was amazing to witness over the duration of the course. The attendees worked really hard in a military style environment including pack marches, strength and stamina conditioning, marching, camping, survival, river crossing, first aid and nutrition. They also focussed on elements that employers have identified as desirable in job applicants, including time management, respect and

looking out for others. During the course the group also spent a day of community service at Chamberlains Ford where they replanted natives and tidied up the area following the winter floods. Their work is very much appreciated by myself and Selwyn District Council staff. This was not a boot camp, it was not hard punishment and it was not demeaning of individuality. There is a growing body of research that shows that approaching our support for one another needs to focus on each other’s strengths and abilities and this is exactly what the LSV course achieved. Kim Strange Our People Prebbleton mother brings creative Kim Strange, of Prebbleton, is the driving force behind Art Couture NZ’s wearable arts competition in Tai Tapu next month. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding Tell me about what made you decide to set up a wearable arts fashion show? Last year I entered a wearable arts competition. First in Rolleston and then I took my outfit over to Westport. I had a friend that modelled for me and we just had so much fun together. My friend suggested why don’t we do one in Christchurch and it just went from there. Four of us are the main ones behind the show. It has been a big learning curve but we have enjoyed the process. We did it as an opportunity for your regular people to have a go. We are a bit different – we wanted the models to be anybody. We didn’t want people to think models can only be young and tall and thin. We have encouraged the entrants to use their friends and family to model for them. What is the criteria for the fashion? It has to be a garment but it can be made out of anything. We have got categories. We have got the sow’s ear, which is our signature category – we created that

because we provide the materials. So people pay an extra $50 to enter and we gave them a bag of materials. That included some regular fabrics but also some odd things. Our other one is a recycled category, which is really popular, and the other one is hardware, which involves using anything from a hardware shop. We have got about 30 entrants and Hillmorton High School has entered. You used to work at the Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters, HIPPY, in Hornby? I left HIPPY Hornby generally because it was a full-time job. Things happened at home where I needed to be mum at home more. I work at South West Baptist Church. I do administration for a couple of pastors. I am running a conference this week. We have got seminars with Canadian psychologist Gordon Neufeld and teamed up with West Spreydon School. We’ve had topics on making sense of pre-schoolers, resilience, recovery and relationships,

I did a wee bit at McKenzie Residential School when it was still running. My last teaching position was at Our Lady of the Assumption School in Hoon Hay as a special needs co-ordinator. What are some of the most important lessons you learned from teaching? Particularly when I worked in special needs, it is that understanding of kids and behaviour. I have dyslexia that runs through our family – it is about advocating for our kids. And making sure kids actually have what they need to succeed. It is helping kids to realise they are not thick and not dumb. They are often intelligent kids. Most children with dyslexia are creative in some respect. You have a family of your own? I have three sons – 18, 16 and 11. They are pretty good teenagers, I can’t complain. I have been married to my husband for 24 years. We met at a youth group sports night a long time ago. consultant. He is also an officer at boys’ brigade, which is run out of South West Baptist Church. It is a bit like scouts but it is run through a church and they have probably got about 50 kids involved. He started boys’ brigade when he was 10 and hasn’t left. He is a trustee at Waipara Adventure Centre. Are you involved with the Prebbleton Community Cottage? I run a craft group from the cottage. I set that up at the beginning of this year. We have a core group of ladies who come every week and it is lovely because there are a whole lot of women who didn’t know each

other before and now they have formed strong friendships. Is that one of the reasons you decided to set up the group in the first place? Absolutely. It is because I love craft. I have inherited a love of craft from my mother Dawn Hansen. It is kind of another thing to do with mental health, connecting in the community and getting to know each other. We run workshops – I ran a mosaic one recently and we have had a photography workshop. You spoke about your mother being interested in the arts. Tell me about her? Absolutely, she has been in craft groups for years, too. She

made my Irish dancing dress when I did Irish dancing as a kid. That is something I will always treasure. I have got it hanging up. She hand-embroidered it and everything. I have got lots of heirloom types of things from Mum. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Halswell. We only moved to Prebbleton just before the February 22, 2011, earthquake – four days before. Our new house got a little damage, we were very fortunate. Prebbleton is lovely, it is such a nice community. Do you have any top places you would like to travel to? Oh yes, Paul and I went to Africa before we had children. Now we have the desire to go to Europe and the United Kingdom, which we have never been to. One of our sons has a friend who moved to France, so we would love to go visit them. What part of Africa did you go to? We started in Kenya and went down the east coast and down to South Africa. We did a camping safari. We stayed in tents all the way through. We did feel safe and we did it through a proper organised tourist group. You don’t feel that unsafe, a part from

when you are in the big cities. We had good guides. We still have a lot of things in our house from Africa. You got to see a lot of wild animals, what were some of your most vivid memories? Probably once when we saw some lions which had just killed a zebra. That was something that will stay with us. We walked quite close to the elephants and rhinoceros. You had to be careful what side you walked on them, they ran remarkably fast too. The tour guides had to let people at the South Luangwa National Park know we were there so they wouldn’t shoot us. They might think you are poachers. If you wanted to go to the toilet at night, you had to shine your torch around in case there were any lions. With a love for challenging her baking skills, the Prebbleton resident has baked an array of cakes which are in hot demand with friends and family. Her baking has received a surge of support on Instagram and Facebook, with people asking if she will start up her own business. “I just sell to friends and family but I wouldn’t say I have got a business as such, and I don’t think I really want to go down that route of having a business. But never say never, who knows,” she said. Creating picturesque cakes wasn’t always a desire of Mrs Goodfellow’s. But when her eldest daughter Emmy celebrated her first birthday in 2014, the former Avonside Girls’ High School teacher was determined to make her daughter’s day as special as possible.

Lincoln students shave hair for cancer charity By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LINCOLN HIGH School students have chopped off their locks for a good cause. More than $2000 was raised to support CanTeen with 10 students shaving and cutting off their hair recently. A total of $2500 was raised from the event organised by students Nicole Spriggs and Maisie Wood, who are the co-

heads of the services’ council. It was the first year a student had a pony tail cut off as well as a head shave. Assistant principal Kylie Wissel said it worked well for the girls as the hair will be used to make wigs. The event also featured the annual Wrath of the Wax where the school’s first XV rugby team went against the first XI football team to see which could raise the most money for the cause.

The losing team was waxed by the winning team. The event was attended by a representative from CanTeen. Dedication balloons, organised by Maisie and Nicole, were made available to students to purchase for $2 to dedicate to someone struggling with cancer. But due to the weather, the students have held off releasing the balloons into the sky until next term.

Weedons Reserve, which they may not get any use out of Frank Dowle – I write regarding this week’s article about the proposed new Weedons pavilion. It seems that one or two agitators are delaying the building of this positive community facility. There was proper consultation with rate payers and I understand that there was widespread support for the facility. Yes sports clubs will benefit, but the pavilion will also be used by community groups for meetings and activities including those for children and the elderly. Unfortunately most of the interesting and historic buildings that once graced Weedons have been demolished resulting in a community with no village centre. The new pavilion will be an appropriate community facility and will also be available for private functions. There is constant concern about children being inactive and that our adult population is increasingly obese. Building facilities such as the Weedons pavilion can only be a good thing and is an investment in our community and our future. I implore the district council to ignore the naysayers and get the pavilion built without further delay.

A draft will be released for public consultation early in 2018. This consultation period, along with the service reviews that will follow, will be an opportunity for residents and bus users to comment on the types of services and connections available in greater Christchurch, and changes they may want to be considered.

I myself would love to have the advantage of an early morning service during the week from Leeston to the connecting bus services at either Rolleston or Lincoln. With an increasing population of teenagers in the local area a weekend service, both into and out of Christchurch, would also be very useful. A saving in time and money in relation

to petrol and associated car running costs would be great. I was interested to note that Leeston residents were surveyed in 2009 by Environment Canterbury and Red Bus Christchurch did a survey in 2015, but I would like to point out that a survey of householders in the outlying areas around the townships may give slightly different results as not only patrons living in the townships use the bus services and you may find that if one was available from the local townships that rural residents would travel to the township to catch the bus.

The Council is continuously looking to new concepts or initiatives to ensure our playgrounds remain appealing and are engaging to the youth of Selwyn. As part of our drive to provide quality local playgrounds, the Council gave permission for the Playground Centre to temporarily install interactive technology at a local playground in Rolleston’s Levi Park to see how the community adopts the new technology. The 90day trial will test the uptake of the technology and if it proves to be popular, it could be added to other parks in the district, if there is support from residents to do so. The trial has no cost to the Council and no commitment has been made to keep the technology beyond the trial.

How does the technology work? The technology is developed by Biba Technologies, based in Canada. Six augmented reality markers are now attached to the existing playground equipment, which can be easily scanned by parents and children to activate mini-games and unlock new play content aimed at three to nine-year olds. Parents can download the games free from the App Store or on Google Play, by searching for ‘playbiba’. The park can still be used in a traditional way.

The technology has been developed to address the concerning trend of decreased physical activity levels in children, and has been successfully trialled in America and Canada. It gives parents another option for encouraging active outdoor play, and supports them to provide additional play experiences for children.

CultureFest 2017 was an outstanding success with around 3,000 people enjoying a range of performances from 20 different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The crowd enjoyed food from a range of vendors each representing a different country. There were plenty of craft, games and activities including Iranian hand crafts, Mah Jong, Henna Tattoos, face painting, balloon art, highland games, Japanese traditional games and Te Taumutu kiwiana products and craft.

Libraries to close for staff development On Friday 13 October, Selwyn District Libraries and Service Centres will not open until 1pm to allow library staff to attend a professional development session. Selwyn Libraries and Service Centres Manager Vicki Carlyon says the libraries hold two staff training and meeting sessions a year focusing on improving the service they provide for Selwyn residents.

The turnout from Selwyn residents, performers, ethnic and cultural groups and food vendors showcased Selwyn’s growing diversity and welcoming nature for newcomers and migrants.

“The agenda we have planned for the day will include programming for young people and children, delivery of council services, working with the Community Services team and use of technology in libraries.” While the closure occurs, people can still visit the library website (www.selwynlibraries.co.nz) to access a range of online services including the library catalogue, eBooks, eAudio, eMagazines, databases and other online services. Items can also be returned through the after-hours returns boxes outside libraries. The Council’s Rolleston headquarters will still be open providing council services on 13 October. Country takes win against national team By Gordon Findlater THE CANTERBURY Country under-18 team got the rare opportunity to play one of the lesser known national schools rugby sides at the weekend. Country were too strong for the New Zealand Barbarians Area Schools, defeating them 47-22 at Southbrook Park in Rangiora. The Area Schools are chosen from the top players in some of the smaller, often rural areas of New Zealand, who do not get the chance to play in the top, higher profile first XV competitions. “That’s the first time we’ve ever played them, and we didn’t

Selwyn’s four premier clubs – Leeston-Southbridge, Weedons, Lincoln and South Malvern – will be looking to end the dominance that Sefton showed last season. The North Canterbury club won all three formats in last season’s Canterbury Country cricket competition. Lincoln reaches high to take national champs By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN UNIVERSITY women’s basketball solidified their national dominance by winning the national tertiary basketball championship at Cowles Stadium last week. Their 60-46 win over Victoria University of Wellington in the final handed the Lincoln women their second title of the year after they took out the 3x3 tertiary title in April. The team were dominant throughout last week’s tournament. They went through pool play undefeated with wins over University of Waikato (71-50), University of Otago (67-50), and Victoria University (5541). They then accounted for Auckland University of Technology 56-45 in the semi-final. The team stepped up in the final with standout performances from Connie Poletti (17points, 10 rebounds), Sophie Schrader (14 points, 3 assists), and Bianca Malifa (11 points, 4 assists). The Lincoln men came agonisingly close to also doing a clean sweep in the tertiary basketball. They won the 3x3 title in April but were pipped by Canterbury University in

A DREAM will become reality for Prebbleton’s Jack Milligan when he races a Toyota 86 sports coupe at the Bathurst 1000 this week. Milligan, 21, has had a challenging few years battling his way through karts and RX7 racing to eventually secure the second CareVets scholarship car in last season’s Toyota 86 Championship. Local scouts seeking support for ‘monster garage sale’ Globally, scouting has a membership of over 31 million scouts and adult leaders. New Zealand has over 20,000, with 65 of those in West Melton. Group leader of the West Melton Scout Group Kyle Stewart says nine leaders volunteer their time to ensure they can provide “an exciting and active programme to instill a sense of pride and self worth into each of the youths, and to help set them up to handle life”. “Funding comes directly from the members of the group and the general community,” Kyle says. “Every two years we hold our monster garage sale with goods donated by you, the locals, to help us provide funds to keep the group running. We are very privileged to have such generous neighbors in our community, many of whom have been, or are, involved in scouting. “Now in our 53rd year as a group, we have had many fantastic leaders, hundreds of youth, we have been involved in local and wider community projects – most recently planting native trees to help D.O.C.

rehabilitate the Waimakariri river bed – we have attended Jamborees in New Zealand and even some international ones,” he says. “At our 50th anniversary celebration we showcased our talents to the wider community with a campfire and involvement in the West Melton 150th.” The philosophy for scouts is ‘Youth at the centre’, and in New Zealand the organisation is working on the ‘Better Prepared’ principle. Kyle says the youth are more involved than ever in the makeup of the programme, and to an extent are beginning to run it themselves. “As we move into the digital age we are coming across new challenges for our youth, but are always able to reference our core values ‘Have Respect, Do what is right and be positive’,” he says. “With our garage sale coming up, we are still looking to the community for support with donations of good-quality items that we can sell. We are very much a volunteer based organisation and appreciate all and any help we can get.”

Bugs dine on cabbage tree Ellesmere gets ready for spring A&P show

Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us ONE OF the 10 native insect species dependent on the cabbage tree as a host is the mealybug balanococcus cordylinidis. The 5mm long mealybug is a waxy grey critter that lives in between the leaf base and the stem of the cabbage tree where leaf litter accumulates to create a moist micro-environment. Mealybugs are sucking insects like aphids and can cause death to plants or trees when in high densities or when they transmit viruses. Tree symptoms include leaf discolouration, wilting and sometimes death. Parting of the leaves at the base will often reveal the culprits, but fortunately there is a saviour in the form of a syrphid,

a native predatory larva of the hoverfly species called allograpta ventralis. This predator can gobble up mealybugs and allow the cabbage tree to recover.

THE ELLESMERE A&P Spring Show is around the corner and the organising committee is busy working behind the scenes to make sure the show will be another success. The show will take place on October 14. This year’s theme will be celebrating diversity in the community. Show president Doug Michael said things have changed in Ellesmere over the last 10 or so years. He said it is time to get the community spirit back into show day and celebrate diversity not just in agriculture, but also in Ellesmere’s demographic, culture and sports. Organised by Sport Canterbury, students are challenged to take part in a number of teambased activities and challenges modelled on the New Zealand television series Top Town. Students will compete for cash for their school on an activity circuit and in obstacle stations in the show’s main ring. Sport Canterbury has organised 22 new games for the event. Another drawcard for children is the young master chef challenge, which will involve schools

New R&D centre to develop food technology expertise Mill processing company Synlait is establishing a research and development centre in Palmerston North to continue building expertise and capability in food technology. “Our goal is to become more profitable and diversified. Investing in our own research and development centre is an opportunity to explore new and unique ways to make the most from milk,” managing director and CEO John Penno says. “We will be developing intellectual property across our value chain, which aims to maximise value at every step, beginning behind the farm gate all the way through to providing market access for our customers.”

Partnering with Massey University and FoodPILOT, one of the New Zealand Food Innovation Network’s four hubs, the new Palmerston North centre will be colocated at the forefront of innovative food technology research and commercialisation in New Zealand. Synlait’s research and development centre will concentrate on new product development, process technology and packaging. “We are serious about growing our research and category development capability and plan to double our investment over the next two years,” Mr Penno says. “Our commitment this financial year will be around $7 million, and our investment in Palmerston North is a major milestone on this journey. “This is the first step for us as we progress towards new products, categories and markets in the future. We will need our

capability in this area to continue evolving so we stay ahead of the game.” General manager of innovation and technical services Roger Schwarzenbach says Synlait will have access to some of the best scientific, technical and commercial minds and equipment in this field. “It’s the perfect environment for our new team to explore options for diversifying our business, both at a product and process level.” Initially the centre will employ food technologists and engineers. Working closely with other teams at Synlait Dunsandel, they will also have access to some of the most sophisticated equipment and processing technology in the world. “As one of New Zealand’s fastestgrowing companies, our people have the opportunity to directly impact decisions we make. We will recruit a team in Palmerston North who aren’t afraid of a challenge and really want to make their mark,” Mr Schwarzenbach says. “This centre will have a real impact on Synlait’s future. The team will help us launch new high-returning dairy categories, bring new product options to market and contribute to ever-improving product quality.”

BLOOMS: If pink isn’t your colour try a mixed bundle of petunia seedlings.

It’s hard to go past pretty petunias If you’ve got an area in your garden where you want to create a mass of colour, you can’t go past petunias. They are prolific bloomers that, if looked after, will continue to flower all summer. You can choose from plain purple, red, pink or white. How about purple with dashes of white like on the primetime violet star? Or the duo red and white variety which, like the name suggests, produces a beautiful mixture of red and white flower? Not sure what colour to select? Then try a mixed bundle. Don’t have a big garden to fill with bedding flowers? Don’t worry about that either. All petunias really need to flourish is a sunny, free-draining spot. They grow equally as well in pots and

hanging baskets making them perfect for just about any garden. Once you’ve selected your seedlings and sunny spot to plant, simply dig small holes, around 3cm deep and 25cm apart, and plant. Be sure to watch out for slugs or trying using our beer bait. It also pays to keep an eye out for aphids. If you spot these pesky pests, a general insecticide or spray of organic alternative, neem oil will sort that problem. And make sure to keep them watered. If you’re not sure how thirsty they are, stick your finger in the soil 2cm deep. If the soil is dry, they will need a drink. Then sit back and wait just four to six weeks for your beautiful petunias to bloom. Remember to pick off dead heads to encourage re-flowering.

Planting out GardEninG veggie seedlings LET’S GET

If you have been growing seedlings inside, it will soon be time to plant them out into the garden or raised bed that you have prepared. Firstly we need to do something called “hardening off”. This process is used to slowly introduce your seedlings that have been growing inside, to the elements. This process helps to give them a better chance at survival, and adapting to the big changes from being inside. At this time of the season, about 3 to 5 days outside in a sunny spot is enough to harden-off plants before transplanting. The sunlight will

strengthen the stems and cell walls, which will reduce transplant shock. It is best to then plant the seedlings into the garden or planter in the early evening. Make sure you give them a water once you have finished planting. This process will be great for the seedlings such as corn, zucchini, pumpkin, cucumber, tomatoes, and lettuces.

By Paul Hoek DAHLIAS ARE one of the best value garden plants for summer colour. Planted in spring, they will flower from December right through summer to late autumn. Native to Mexico and first introduced into Europe in the 1600s, dahlias have been so extensively cross-bred over hundreds of years that the dahlia family now includes a large range of flower types, plant sizes and every colour imaginable. Dahlias are sorted into main groups according to their flower shape. The most common types are the cactus dahlia, with a spiky appearance and decorative dahlias which include a range of forms from tight ball-shaped flowers through to more open forms called water lily dahlias. As well as these two, other common types include dwarf forms ideal for borders or potting, and single flowered forms. Dahlias prefer a full sun location, but will tolerate some shade. Drainage is very important as the tubers do not like being water logged for any length of time. In high rainfall or wet areas they can easily be grown by using slightly raised beds to help with drainage. Plant the tubers with the crown just below the surface of the soil and water in. Little attention is required during growing other than to make sure they’re watered if conditions get quite dry. Removing old flower heads will keep the

IT’S TIME FOR THE SPRING FLING For the seventh year running, people will again flock to the Ellesmere Spring Fling. The Ellesmere Spring Fling is the crème de crème of fetes. Held in the most beautiful garden – David Hobbs’ award winning Broadfield Garden – this is no ordinary affair. “The Spring Fling is a wonderful day out,” says Janice Burnett who is Chairperson of Community Care Lincoln. Whether you are a keen gardener wanting inspiration, looking for quality items to enjoy or tuck away for Christmas or simply keen on having a good time, this event promises plenty. Wander through the diverse garden and around the superb gathering of stalls selling everything from fresh produce, food, drink (wine and beer will be available), artisan arts and crafts to plants. Find a place to relax under the shade of a tree or bask in the sun listening to live music while partaking of a snack, lunch, Devonshire tea or beverage. David Hobbs, whose garden fills ten acres and is of such a high standard that it has both national and international recognition, will once again offer garden tours. You will have the chance to learn about the plants growing at Broadfield Gardens while garnering some green thumb tips from the expert himself. With the focus this year on gardening, you will be inspired by the marvellous gardens David has created and have the chance to learn more about gardening with demonstrations presented by horticultural experts.

Whether you’re buying or selling a property it’s a good idea to learn as much as you can about the different methods used in New Zealand. One that confuses a lot of people is the multi-offer process, where all interested prospective buyers are encouraged to submit their best offer and the seller can choose whichever one looks most attractive. “This process is designed to give all potential buyers an equal shot,” explains Real Estate Agents Authority chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith. “The process is not like an auction where an agreement is automatically formed with a successful bidder. The seller is not obliged or required to accept any particular offer in this situation; they may accept one offer, reject all offers, or choose to negotiate further with one particular party.” The actual form that a multi-offer process takes can differ from agency to agency – it’s not defined in law or set by the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). A multi-offer process can only be described as such when there is more than one offer in writing – a real estate agent is not allowed to pretend that there are genuine competing offers if they do not exist. “Agents are expected to clearly explain the process and any relevant paperwork to all

prospective buyers and sellers,” LampenSmith says. “If you’re unsure about anything, ask the agent to clarify it or seek advice from your lawyer. It’s far better to do this at the beginning than face confusion and disappointment further down the track.” All the offers are presented fairly in this process and a real estate agent must not favour one over another. All prospective buyers should know that they need to put their very best offer on the table, Lampen-Smith says. Some real estate agencies will hold on to the first offer they receive while they check for others, effectively creating a multi-offer process. “This may feel unfair if you think that your offer should ‘win’ because it was in first, but it’s worth remembering that the agent is working for the seller. Their primary responsibility is to get the seller the best outcome, considering both price and any conditions from buyers such as settlement date or being subject to finance.” If as a prospective buyer you are told that a sale is a multi-offer process but the situation later changes to a stand-alone offer, you must be told about this and get a chance to review your offer and submit a new one.

How to give a multi-offer process your best shot 1. Do as much homework on a property as you can before making the offer so you minimise any risks. This is important for many reasons; not least because it may help you eliminate some conditions and help you determine what your ‘best’ offer will be. 2. When thinking about the offer, it’s worth considering how you would feel if you found out that a higher offer had been accepted ahead of yours. If you think you would be prepared to pay more, then it’s better to make that decision at the start than when it’s too late. 3. There is often confusion around timeframes in a multi-offer process, especially if a potential buyer thinks they are the only people who are interested. Talk to the real estate agent marketing the property to make sure you are clear about any deadlines and about the sale process as a whole. 4. Remember that the highest offer is not always the winner. If you were a seller, would you prefer a higher offer or one with fewer conditions? It’s impossible to guess what kind of offer will suit a seller’s particular circumstances, but it’s a good idea to eliminate as many barriers to a swift and easy sale as you can. 5. Want to get in early? Include an expiry time on your offer. This kind of sunset clause means the agent must present it to the seller so they can consider it before it expires.
